Look up Table issues

Hello All,

I have a look up table that is presently 2 columns by 14 rows. It releates to one cell in the spreadsheet to make a determination about another cell.
The formula works (thanks to all the help here!) and it looks like this:
=(VLOOKUP(B13,Sheet2!$A$1:$B$15,2,FALSE)-I13)&" days before demurrage on" & TEXT(TODAY()," m/d")


I wanted to add another comparison, based on 2 cells in the spreadsheet, and a 3rd column, where only some of the cells have information. I thought I had it but it's not working. I tried this:

=(VLOOKUP(B8:C8,Sheet2!$A$1:$C$15,3,FALSE)-I8)&" days before demurrage on" & TEXT(TODAY()," m/d")

What did I do wrong?

I am not quite sure I undestand what you are trying to do, but I can tell you that this part is wrong:
=(VLOOKUP(B8:C8...

The first argument in the VLOOKUP function needs to be a SINGLE value/cell, it cannot be a range.

Take a look at the VLOOKUP function in Excel's built-in help for more detailed explanation of what all the arguments mean.

Another question.... Can I make a look up table for the ANSWER to that fomula?

For instance, if the answer in the I column is a negative number, can I change the part that says:
&" days before demurrage on" & TEXT(TODAY()," m/d")


to say:
demurrage on Whatever date it occured.

Lookups are good for looking up/matching values, but if you are just going to change the text based on if something is a negative number, I would use an IF statement. The structure of that might look something like.

=IF(VLOOKUP(...)<0,"Then say this","Else say this")

If I had a better idea of what you were trying to do (big picture), I might be able to provide some other suggestions, but I can't really tell, especially since I can't really tell where the data you posted appears on your worksheet.

Hmm, I hear you. What I'm trying to do is :

• I want to enter the company that supplied the car
  • Each company has different terms, ie some have due dates after 60 days some after 90
• I want to enter the date that the car came in
• I have a column where it shows the # of days the car has been "held" using a formula
• I want it to calculate the # of days it is overdue based on the value in the "held" and the look up table

I want it to take the suppliers terms, listed here, and determine demurrage (how overdue the cars are or how close). Once it's over, right now it prints :

-2 days before demurage

I want it to say Demurage on 7/17 instead
