For work I use a tempalte which has macros in it. I keep getting security alerts though when I open it. I want to mark this template as safe so I dont keep getting a warning. How would I do that? I'd also like to mark a whole directory's macros as safe if possible. But would like to learn how to do both, not just one.

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).
Take a look at setting up Trusted Locations: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/e...sted-location-for-your-files-HA010031999.aspx

To make a single document safe, regardless of its location, you can sign the VBA project with a Digital Signature. The first time a user opens the file, they will need to go through the process to accept your signature. But once they do, ALL files that they opened that are signed by you will automatically be trusted (on that particular workstation).

location set, thanks.

not sure how to set a digital signature. is that necessary tho? i'm not trying to make it safe for everyone, just myself. this is of course assuming i didnt make the whole location safe, which is not really what i wanted to do anyway.

not seeing it there joe. that shows how to work with it once
created, how to enable depts etc but i dont see the actual
creation.

Once you get the digital self-certificate installed in your
machine then in the VBE just Tools | Digital Signature... and
follow your nose.

(not sure what VBE is - VB editor?)

>Once you get the digital self-certificate installed
huh?

i went to the VBA screen (or is VBE the official name for this?)
Tools - Dig Sig

Dig Sig Alert:
The VBA project is currently signed as
Certificate name: [No certificate]
Sign as
Certificate name: [No certificate]
{choose} button

I clicked on the Choose button. Doesnt lead to much.

i did google it, found some information but missing a critical step

To create your own digital certificate

In the Get a Digital ID dialog box, select Create your own digital
ID.

Important: The Get a Digital ID dialog box appears only if you
attempt to digitally sign a document without a digital certificate.

I havent found how to get the "get a digital ID dialog box", nor
how to attempt to digitally sign a doc.

Which version of Excel are you working with?

thanks Joe. this seems to be on the right track but I think I'm missing something.

  1. In Microsoft Windows XP, on the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Digital Certificate for VBA Projects.
2. Follow the instructions in the Create Digital Certificate dialog box.

Step 1 went fine, except that it just asked me for a new and thats it.

Step 2, in the Create Digital Certificate dialog box once I typed a name that was it. No further instructions. Where do I go from here?

It has been a while since I have done it, but that may be all you need to do to create one.

Try going in to Excel and from the VB Editor, go to the Tools drop-down menu and select "Digital Signature". Under the "Sign As" portion, click "Choose". Does it show the name of the Certificate you just created? If so, you are all set. Just select it to sign your macro/VBA.
