Manipulating links

Hi...

I´m kinda new to the more advanced excel use. I have a sheet that requires some linking. I´m trying to get around using Edit - Links to update all the links in the sheet.

My sheet consists of a lot of numbers, all linked to a few sheet over a few periods. The sheets that I´m linking into all have a similar naming convention, i.e. C:\2005-03\excel2005-03.xls, C:\2005-06\excel2005-06.xls
etc.

What I want to do... or try to do is let a user type 2005-06 for example in a cell and all the links in my sheet would then point to the latter example I gave.

I´ve been able to piece together a string that points to the right location, the right sheet. But that´s just what it is.. a stirng.. I can´t get it to act as a link.

Is there some formula og other that can help me?

Enclose your string within the =INDIRECT() worksheet function.

Thanks.. but then I have to have the file open

That is.. the file that i am linking into must be open when using indirect.
.. or am i misunderstanding that?

Yes .. that is usually a problem with this method, because if it isn't open it gives errors in the cells.

The only function I know of that will access a closed workbook is SUMPRODUCT()
