Modifiable source in a drop-down list?

I am currently structuring and analyzing qualitative data into categories by using a "dynamic data validation", i.e. I have a set of categories which I am continuously "expanding" while analyzing. I however have a problem if I want to modify the name of a category (source) which I have been using for a while.

For instance, I have been coding 100 "events" my using categories from a drop-down list where I have continuously been adding categories (while doing the analysis). The problem I meet is when I want to change one of my current categories (i.e. not add a new one) because I think is does not apply any longer.

If I change the category (the source of the drop-down list), the old name changes in the drop-down list, but all past work is still according to the "old" category name. I understand this is because the categories are words in cells, i.e. hard coded data not formulas.

My challenge is that I want to conduct grounded qualitative analysis where the iteration of the categories is the actual the outcome, i.e. I develop the categories while analyzing the data.

My question is; how can I create a drop-down list which allows for modifications of categories and also changes the my "past" usages of the drop-down? Is that possible, or does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative function to conduct "dynamic coding".

I would very much appreciate help!

Niklas
