i cannot copy and paste formula and formatting from 1 work book to another only allows me to copy the raw data.the process of copy and paste works well within a work book(from page to page etc) but not from 1 work book to a new work book
what function have i messed up
when i do paste function in the new work book a different drop down box comes (different to the normal box where you select paste special etc)this drop down box has questions such as Microsoft office worksheet object etc

It's most likely because you opened the second workbook in a separate instance of Excel, (ie you minimized the first work book and then double clicked the second file).

Instead of opening that way, use the File > Open option, which will open it in the same instance of excel and will allow you to effectively use paste special.

thanks for that will see how it goes but cannot see what i did different to every other time
but will try this any way
