Is there a way to get a message box to display a message if data is added or changed to certain cells only?

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.

yes you can use the change event of the worksheet and test to see if the target cell is in your range. It goes in the procedure associated with the specific worksheet eg:

Code:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)

If Not Application.Intersect(Target, Range("a1")) Is Nothing Then

        MsgBox "range a1 altered"
    End If

End Sub

That worked great, thanks!

Is there also a way to get a message box to appear if the number of characters/digits in certain cells exceed a certain number?

You can only have one change event per sheet so you will need to set up IF or SELECT statements to check your different criteria. You can use the LEN function to check the length of a variable

Should that not be WorkSheet_Change instead of WorkSheet_SelectionChange?

For you second question, also use the WorkSheet_Change and LEN
Code:
If LEN(Target) >5 Then MsgBox "Message"
