Multiple Excel apps running

I recently installed Excel 2010 after having used Excel 2003 for many years.
Since I installed the newer version I find that whenever I open an Excel file by clicking on a file name within a My Documents window a new Excel application opens. Before long I may have 10 different Excel applications running simultaneously. I don't recall this occurring in Excel 2003.

This isn't critical but I soon run out of memory and I have to manually quit each application.

Is there a way to only have ONE Excel application running even though I may have several individual files open?

(Note: I prefer to open my Excel files through the My Docs screens rather thatn open them up from within Excel.)

Excel Facts

Last used cell?
Press Ctrl+End to move to what Excel thinks is the last used cell.
The two things that I can think of, both under File | Options, Advanced.

1. Uncheck the "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) (Way at the bottom)
2. Uncheck the "Show all windows in the Taskbar" (around the middle)

Thank you for the proposed solution. I've tried it (and various combinations of it) and it hasn't worked.

I still have a separate and distinct Excel app. running with every single Excel file I open. I manage this by exiting the application every time I want to close down a file. If I don't do that I will have a separate Excel app. running for every file that is open.

I'm stumped!
