I've been going thru an excel book, doing some learning in my time off :)

Some questions I've come across, hoping yall can advise.

  • Once I name a range, how do I erase it?
  • How do I see the various ranges? I named A1-A5 "Hello" but then wasn't sure if Hello referred until A5 or A4.
  • How do I expand a named range? I could want to change one that was 4 rows long, to 5 rows.
  • I saw this formula =Jan South; What would this return?

Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
1. Depends on version. In 2003 and prior, Insert-Name-Define, select the name and press Delete. In 2007 or later, you use the Name Manager on the formulas tab.
2. It refers to A1:A5
3. Much like in 1, you can edit the refersto to reflect the new range, or use a dynamic range based on a formula
4. It refers to the intersection of the Jan range and the South range. It's not a common usage and I personally don't recommend it.

regarding the last point, i agree at the moment, don't see much functionality. however another question has popped up -

G3-K3 = South
H2-H6 = Jan

The Jan South intersection works fine.

However when I expand the definition of Jan to be H2-I6, ie its now 2 columns, I get a #VALUE. what's up?

Your intersection is now 2 cells so what would you expect to be returned to one cell?

that's what i wasn't sure about, but i assumed the sum.

Not unless you add a SUM function. ;)
