i need a macro to find the first empty row in column a and then select all rows down from there and delete all rows

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
Try something like

Code:
Sub Delete_Rows()
    Dim i, n As Integer
    Dim totalrows
        totalrows = ActiveSheet.Rows.Count

        For i = 1 To totalrows
            If ActiveCell.Value = Empty Then
                n = ActiveCell.Row
                Selection.Resize(totalrows - n, 1).EntireRow.Delete
                Exit Sub
            End If
            ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select
        Next i

End Sub

note it starts from the current active cell, if this isn't appropriate you'll to need to amend as.
