I have 11 columns of data, in which I have 10 zeros and one (1) text answer e.g.

0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,Service,0

In cell A2 I am trying to have the answer be "Service"


In cell A2 I have the following formula which works fine if the answer "Service" is in colums Y - AF but when trying to nest I am limited to the 8 nest rule. Because I am not summing numbers I am not sure how to work through trying to find isolated text in a row. I have reviewed Lookup functions but with the randomness of the text result I am not sure whether it can be built into a lookup range.

Hi and thank you,

No the row does not always show "Service", it could be 5000S, or Other. Also I am seeking to be able to expand the grid as new product groups are allocated via the marco that generates this grid

In the grid below it shows where the "If" nests have worked and the fact that columns AG+ are returning "0" because the IF statement cannot extend to columns AG - AI. Intention is extend by another 6 columns in time.

Objective is to return the Text words under the column of Product Group so that it can then be used in SumIFs functions for analysis.

Assuming that there is only 1 text entry in Y13:AI13 and all other entries are zero, then try: =lookup(2,1/Y13:AI13,Y1:AI1)

Yes, there will only be one text entry.

The precise field location is X2, my error on stating A2, does this make a difference on the formula.

I have posted the formula as you have recommended but I have #N/A error.


I have checked to make sure that all fields have same the attributes etc.

So close.....

Took me a few hours but this is how I learn.

I do hope you have excel 2007 or better.

=uniquevalues()

I am operating Office 2010, please excuse my lack of knowledge in advance, what is "=uniquevalues()" and how would I use this in a formula?

And you are correct this is all part of the learning process and this forum is an excellent educational tool.

in column A type =uniquevalues(drag along the cells you want to find the value in and press enter

then drag the cell down to copy formula for each row

Hello Again Dryver14,

I entered the formula in the required cell being A2 as =uniquevalues(Y2:AI2) but it returned a #NAME? error.

I do appreciate your efforts but I must need to load some Add-Ins?

I am beginning to think I cannot resolve this one, but your idea of uniquevalues has merit in its context but just does not work on my system.
