Nesting

In F1 I need a formula that will look at the date in E1 and if the date is any date in Jan, then put in column F a 1, if it is a February date, then put in column F a 2, and so on.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

No IF is required. Use...

=MONTH(E1)

In F1 enter & copy down:

=MONTH(E1)
