Yes, I am in the dark ages and using 2003! I don't really know programming, have dabbled in formulas and conditional formatting and macros, as well as checked out the message board and just cannot come up with the 'how to'.

I have a range of cells, say A1 through G1. If cell D1 = '1', then I want that range to be, say orange. If cell D1 = '2', then I want the range to be blue, etc.

It seems so simple...

Thanks for any help!!

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.

How many "etcs" do you have?

In Excel 2003 you can only have 3 conditions.

If you have more than 3 then you'll need a VBA procedure.

Well, how convenient is that! I only have 3!!!
It must be "Miller Time"! ;)

Try this...

Select the *entire* range A1:G1 starting from cell A1.
Cell A1 will be the active cell. The active cell is the
one cell in the selected range that is not shaded. The
formula will be relative to the active cell.

Goto the menu Format>Conditional Formatting
Condition 1
Select the Formula Is option
Enter this formula in the box on the right:
=$D1=1
Click the Format button
Select the Patterns tab
Select a shade of ORANGE
OK
Click the Add button
Condition 2
Select the Formula Is option
Enter this formula in the box on the right:
=$D1=2
Click the Format button
Select the Patterns tab
Select a shade of BLUE
OK
Click the Add button
Condition 3
Select the Formula Is option
Enter this formula in the box on the right:
=$D1=3
Click the Format button
Select the Patterns tab
Select a shade of ?????
OK out
