I have a HP laptop with Vista.

It has crashed, and I do not have the backup cd's.

What are my options ( other than throwing it away and buying a Mac )?

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
When you first boot it up there might be an F?? key for recovery. Look at the bottome of the screen just after you power it up. If so then it should have the original OS image.
