ODBC connection without storing data

When I establish an ODBC connection in Excel to power some pivot table reporting it greatly increases my file size, so I'm assuming it is storing all the data behind the scenes. Is there a way to connect to an ODBC source without storing the data and drastically increasing my file size?
 

Excel Facts

Do you hate GETPIVOTDATA?
Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
