Order of events happening... occurences

Ok. So I am trying to get the order of when an event happened. (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc).

Column 1 is cars... col 2... dates... and col3 is the desired output I want.

COL 1 COL 2 COL3
CAR-A 01/10 1
CAR-A 02/10 2
CAR-A 03/10 3
CAR-B 02/10 1
CAR-B 03/10 2
CAR-C 04/10 1
CAR-D 02/10 1
CAR-D 06/10 2

I have an alogorhtyhm but seems to keep breaking when I only have one occurence.

Can anyone help me out... THANKS

Try in Col C

=COUNTIF(A$1:A1,A1)

and copy down

=COUNTIF(B:B, "<=" & C1)
