painting the left hand side of the excel window problem

Once in a long while, when I open a spreadsheet that is a Bloomberg intensive, FINCAD intensive spreadsheet which calls a grueling macro, the left 20% of the excel window goes blank. Any ideas how to avoid this? Besides rebooting, getting more memory,...
