pattern recognition?

Hi -
I have either an X or a Y in a column.
What I am looking for is a minimum of 3 X's in a row followed by a Y.
Example:
X
X
X
X
Y

I am hoping to have a function at bottom of my work sheet that will alert me to when this occurs.
Someone suggested that I can use a countif function, but I am not sure how to make it recognize when the "streak of X's" has been broken by a "Y".

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Here's one approach you can try using a helper column:

• Assuming your data starts in A1, enter the following formula in B4 and drag down to the end of your dataset:
  =IF(A4="Y",IF(SUMPRODUCT((A1:A3="X")*1)=3,"Break",""),"")
• Then at the bottom of your worksheet (e.g. assuming the data goes to down to cell A100) you could say:
  =COUNTIF(B4:B100,"Break")

which returns the number of times a >=3X streak is broken by a Y.

But to add one more layer, not ever row in the column always has a value.
example:
A1 x
A3 X
A5 X
A8 Y

is there a way to modify that formula to give me a " break" when the Y hits?

Hi board - I was hoping to revisit a question I previously had.

Occassionally I will have something like:
X
Y
X
X
Y "Break"

The formula above given by CircledChicken (thanks by the way!) returns "BREAK" after the 5th row. I believe it counts 3 "X's" even though they are not in a row.

I am hoping someone can think of a formula that only returns "break" only after there are 3 "X's" in a row (ie - XXXY....and not XXYXY).

Hope this is question makes sense. please let me know if I need to clarify.

=IF(AND(A1="x",A2="x",A3="x",A4="y"),"break", "") in B4 and dragged down?

Mike - thanks for the response. That does work great for most of my data.

however, and I should have mentioned this earlier (sorry), there are some rows that are blank and need to be skipped.

example
X
X
"(empty)"
X
Y "BREAK"


Basically I need a formula to say "if the previous 3 rows that have text are X's" then a "Y" (in the next row that has text), return "break".

Not sure if there is anything in excel that actually will do that though. Ive googled and played around with sumproduct, but can't seem to get it to work.

This is well above my head...but I think it works. I just have to figure out how to commit this/save it.
