# Pivot Table grouping

Hi,

I'm new to pivot tables and can't seem to figure this out. Basically I have a bunch of plans catogorized as designated or non designated (1,0) , then further classified as ongoing, terminated or partial terminated (O, T, P). Each plan has a valuation date and an amount. Basically I want to group T&P together, and I want to group the valuation date by years.

My problem is I can't seem to group T&P together and O separetly and I also want to find out the number of entries in each year.

So in the end my pivot table will tell me

How many Designated (Terminated & Partial) in 1990 & amount
How many Designated (Terminated & Partial) in 1991 & amount
....
How many Designated (Ongoing) in 1990 & amount
...

How many Non Designated (Terminated & Partial) in 1990 & amount
How many NonDesignated (Terminated & Partial) in 1991 & amount
....
How many Non Designated (Ongoing) in 1990 & amount
...

What I've done so far was put the following in the row fields: (designated/nondesignated); (Ongoing/Termination/Partial Termination); and Valuation Year. In the data row I have the amount as a calculated field adding some entries together, and I grouped the valuation year.

Thanks,
Paul

### Excel Facts

VLOOKUP to Left?
Use =VLOOKUP(A2,CHOOSE({1,2},\$Z\$1:\$Z\$99,\$Y\$1:\$Y\$99),2,False) to lookup Y values to left of Z values.
1) Add the grouping into the source data and bring that into the pivot

2) Add / change the category values for the group to numbers, and use the 'starting at' ... 'ending at' feature of number grouping. see excel help file 'Group or ungroup numeric items in a PivotTable or PivotChart field'
