I want to insert calculated fields on a pivot table.

however, it will not allow me because i checked the data model box so that I could look at distinct counts.

is there a work around for this limitation ?

Excel Facts

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
Limitation, are you being serious? The data model offers DAX measures which are a zillion times better then calculated fields.
However learning DAX, in all it's finesse, is not that easy.

So what kind of calculated field would you need to have in the data model? I'm sure the fine experts here can assist you in writing those DAX.
