Pivot tables and conditional formatting

I have a pivot table built on PowerPivot data which includes a calculated field called Variance (budget - actual). I would like this field to render in a different color than the pivot table style to set it apart from the rest of the data (e.g. budget and actual in style color, variance in red fill). Can pivot table data be conditionally formatted in this way such that however this field is presented, be it a row or a column, it will appear in a different color?

I'm using Excel 2010. I've read some posts here that indicate conditional formatting on pivot tables isn't possible but they were dated 2001 so I wasn't sure if things have changed. I've seen posts from Microsoft that seem to indicate it is possible but I think these might mean that the data can be formatted after the pivot table is rendered rather than having this format being a part of the pivot table such that formatting isn't lost when users change the layout.
