Is it possible to prevent excel from auto-formatting dates?

Im pasting chunk of data into a single cell. When i text to columns it auto formats the data, that is supposes to be hh:mm, into mm:dd:yyyy hh:mm:ss AM/PM.

I need the cells to maintain the hh:mm and then total when using a sum formula.

the hh:mm regularly goes over 24 hours, causing the formatting to change.

Am i using the incorrect custom format of [hh]:mm? When i change the formatting after the cell is already populated with the formatting, it gives me the numerical value of the date/time.

XL97, windows XP

Thanks!

Cory

Formula for Yesterday
Name Manager, New Name. Yesterday =TODAY()-1. OK. Then, use =YESTERDAY in any cell. Tomorrow could be =TODAY()+1.
