I have formatted until I'm blue in the face. When I enter a date it is putting an equal sign in front of it like I'm doing a formula.
There has to be some setting somewhere?????

Using a mouse in Excel is the work equivalent of wearing a lanyard when you first get to college
You can use clear formats in the ribbon. Its to the right and I believe it just says clear (sorry on my mac and I dont have excel 2007 or 2010 on it) and when you click clear the formats.

or

You can go to number format and choose I believe custom. You can enter a custom formula. For instance if you enter mm.dd.yy. it will convert to

08.12.11

Hope that helps

Tried clearing format, tried reformatting. No matter what, when I enter the date it automatically puts and equal sign in front of it and treats it as a division problem.

to get around the problem now you can enter the date like this:

="08/12/11"

Did you change any of your excel options recently?

You are in Lotus formula entry mode. Do the following to put things normal...

XL2003 - Tools/Options/Transition Tab... uncheck the "Transition formula entry" checkbox. Actually, uncheck any of the Lotus compatibility items.

XL2007 - Click the Office button (the round circle icon in upper left corner of the Excel window, click "Excel Options", select "Advanced" from the left-hand list, scroll down to end of right-hand listing and uncheck the "Transition formula entry" checkbox. Actually, uncheck any of the Lotus compatibility items.

What version of Excel are you using?
Check these settings...

Excel versions 2003 and earlier:

Tools>Options>Transition tab>uncheck Transition Formula Entry

Excel 2007:

Office button>Excel Options>Advanced>scroll all the way down to Lotus Compatibility Settings>uncheck Transition Formula Entry

Not sure where this is in Excel 2010.
