Problem with # sign

Hopefully this is a small problem! While trying to insert a number in a cell, all I get is a # sign. I have tried making the cell larger but no success. I also have tried formatting in number and also in general. Help please!

Thanks-
Dan

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).
Strange, but a single digit number works but double digit number doesn't. I really thought enlarging the cell would work. I've even changed fonts to no avail!

Should keep it to your original thread...
A mod will likely close the other thread soon...

Anyway..

1. Make sure you're formatting the cell as general or number PRIOR TO entering the number. Formatting a cell AFTER entering the number will not change the value in the cell.

2. Do you have any VBA code in the book? - Disable macros and save/reopen the book to test. Does the problem still occur?

3. Does it occur in ALL books/sheets? Or just one in particular?

4. Does the # appear in the Cell, or the Formula bar, or both?

5. Is this related to this thread?

Are you entering the number in one cell, but it's actually a different cell with a formula that is giving you this problem?

Thanks for your response!

1. Tried this with same result.
2. Problem still exists.
3. Just the one I'm working on.
4. Only in the cell. For example when I enter the number 12 in the cell and the # sign appears, the number 12 is in the formula bar.
5. Don't understand question.

5. Are you entering the number in say A1, but you have a formula in D1 that refers to A1. And D1 is where the formatting issue is happening?

OK

Format cell as general OR number
Enter the number
Is the cell STILL formatted as it was prior to entering the number?

are you actually typing it with your keyboard, or copy pasting it from somewhere else?

Yes, formatting is the same prior to entering the number and I am typing the number on the keyboard.
