I am looking for a program to export certain sheets in my workbook to ASCII Text file. I know you can do this in excel but i need to be able to manipulate the output to a certain format. We have been using a fox pro from dos but we are looking to get into the 21st century and bring to windows. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)

You might still be able to do this is Excel.
What kind of formatting changes are you talking about?
Are you exporting to a Fixed Width (Space Demilited) Text File?

It varies from comma, to space, to comma with quoted text, and then there are a few that look for a ":" (see below). I output from the same sheet to different files based on cities or counties dependinding on who it is going to.

example from above

header1 : text goes here
header2 : text goes here
header3 : text goes here
etc....

in that expample it origianlly looks like:

A B C
1 header1 header2 header3 etc...
2 text text text etc...

Thanks.

It looks like you want to transpose the data. You can do that in Excel.

You should be able to export to the different file formats. You may be able to record/create macros to automate those steps for you.

I am not sure what you are looking for that Excel doesn't provide that you would think would make this task easier. Excel is very flexible in all the different formats you can export to. Just about the only format Excel doesn't seem to export to anymore is DBF files (starting with Excel 2007).

I guess the first question would be "how well do you know VBA"? If you are not familiar at all with VBA, reading information on how to export using VBA may prove to be a little daunting. If you Google "using excel vba to export text data", you will see a lot of promising hits, but many of them assume you have some knowledge of VBA.

If you can format your data in Excel the way you like it, you can actually get a lot of the VBA code that you need by using the Macro Recorder and recording yourself performing the tasks. That might be a good place to start, and you can build on it from there, maybe using some of the information found in those Google search hits (and you can search this board to for lots of information).
