Protect Cells

How do I just protect specific cells from editing, but not require a password to open the file?

Select the cells that you want to be able to change, press CTRL + 1, on the Protection tab untick Locked.

Then protect the sheet.

It worked on a few cells, but not all. I selected all of the cells that I want to make accessible for editing. When I protected the sheet and tested it, only a few cells were protected.

Well I don't understand that as cells are locked by default. Unless you have previously unlocked other cells?

I checked each cell separately to verify locked or unlocked, and they all were correct. Still, when I try to edit the "locked" cells, most of them will allow it.

Ok, I figured it out. I had to uncheck the "allow all user to select locked cells" field. Thanks.
