Hi,

I have created a workbook and want to protect it from others modifying cells they shouldn't touch.

Now, I know how to protect the Spreadhseet and stop ceels be meddled with. However there are areas which needs data pasted into certain cells from another workbook to make calucations and anaylsis works.

How can I protect the worksheet, but still let data be pasted into the required cells?

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Hi jrm,

You can format each cell to be either locked or unlocked.

When a worksheet is protected, you can't paste into locked cells, but you can paste into the cells you have formatted to be unlocked.

To unlock the cells that you want to allow the user to edit...
  • With the sheet unprotected, Select the cells
  • Right click > Format Cells...> Protection tab
  • Uncheck the box labeled "Locked"
