Protecting Cells ( by color ? ) or by Cell Reference ?

Question -

How can I lock certain cells?

Can I lock by color ?
Can I lock by cell reference?

I have a worksheet that some cells need to be locked ( subtotals and such ).

Where can I get the 'walk-through' on how to accomplish this?
