Protecting cells question

Hi,

I am trying to protect some cells in a large workbook which is format hungry. When I unprotect the cells I need to I get the error 'Too many formats'.

If I try to unprotect all cells in a sheet and then protect the one's I need to the same thing occurs.

Any ideas why removing protection would cause the number of formats to exceed the excel limit?

Cells are 'locked' by default in Excel. By 'removing protection' or unlocking cells you are, in effect, fomatting them.

To deal with the inherenent Too Many Formats error:

The xlsgen program will both count and reduce the cell formats

While it does cost $40 it is the best solution I have come accross for this

ASAP utilities is a freed addin that will remove duplicate styles, not to the same level as xlsgen
