Protecting Data Validation List but allowing to use

I am having an issue trying to protect a data validation list. If I don't protect the cell with the list then people can type what every they like in the cell and if I do protect the cell then they cant use the list. I have tried a couple different ways but can't seem to make this work. Is there any way around this? I am trying to make the spreadsheet stupid proof. thanks!

If you turn on the Error Alert in the DV menu, they can only use selections from the list.
