Protecting/Unprotecting Cells

I have a protected sheet for the obvious reasons. Is there a way that I can unprotect only a portion of it (say Cells a1-a8) so that some data can be changed?

Yes:

Unprotect the sheet. Then select the range A1:A8 and choose Format Cells. On the protection Tab, deselect the Locked. Now reprotect the sheet. The unlocked cells will now be available for editing.
