Recording data entry dates automatically

I have a worksheet where I track project status of 50 or so projects at once. As each project passes through a defined milestone which is common for all projects ( such as design, tender, construction, completion) I need to update the project status. How can I record the date at which I hit the check box against each project status such that this date is entered into a diary log of project progress? Today() will always update itself so I cant see how I can use this function.

when in design mode double click the checkbox to get its code then use this
