Hello,

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the "Refresh" and "Refresh All" option on the Pivot Table contextual tab?

I assumed that if I clicked Refresh it would only refresh the one pivot table that I was in at the time but it seems to refresh all of them.. so 2 questions:

1) How can I get it to refresh just the one pivot table that I am in (rather than all of them on that workbook)?
2) What does the "refresh all" option do that "refresh" doesn't?

Thanks,

Louise

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)

Hi Louise,

My understanding is that Refresh will refresh the Pivot Table Cache of the current Pivot Table. If you have more than one Pivot Table sharing the same Cache, then those linked Pivot Tables (but no others) will be updated when you click Refresh.

Refresh All will refresh all the Caches and therefore Pivot Tables in the workbook.

Thanks Jerry, that's great.

When you say if it uses the same cache , I assume that you mean that it has come from the same data source (and that they then share the same cache in the background) is that so?

If that is the case then that would make sense as the 2 pivot tables that I have been looking at are from the same data source.

Thanks,

Louise

Good question! This topic had always been a little foggy for me. ;)

I found this article that helped cut through the fog. It helps clarify the relationship between the data source and pivot cache.

Hope this helps!
