I need to remove the IM & number ( IM962/2008) and the RMR & number ( RMR 337) from each row. the two values of 43 on the right hand side i would like to try keep in the text, but if it gets removed i'm ok with that.

Does anyone know of a way to remove these numbers and the IM/RMR text from these rows?

thx

Hi
Welcome to the board

Your post is not easy/agreable to read
- the sentences in the 2 lists are not in the same order
- the text is sometimes very small

This UDF erases:

- The word IM followed by a number, a slash, a number. There can be a space between the IM and the first number.

- The word RMR followed by a number. There can be a space between the RMR and the number.

Try:

Code:
Function RemoveCodes(s As String) As String

    With CreateObject("vbscript.regexp")
        .Pattern = "IM ?\d+/\d+|RMR ?\d+"
        RemoveCodes = .Replace(s, "")
    End With
End Function

In B1:

= RemoveCodes(A1)
Copy down.

Hi PGC,

WOW, thanks very much for this. Apologies for the dissorder of the post, i did not notice the order.

I found this site http://www.aivosto.com/vbtips/regex.html, which provided a demo tool to test the regex function. The best i could manage was below, but it struggled with the IM 241/2008 number combination.<TABLE style="WIDTH: 355pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=473 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 355pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 17298" width=473><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #ece9d8; BORDER-TOP: #ece9d8; BORDER-LEFT: #ece9d8; WIDTH: 355pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #ece9d8; HEIGHT: 15pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=473 height=20>[A-Z]*[\d\d]*/*[0-9]*\S</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Thanks for this answer, you have shown me what's possible with this function, just need to figure out how to remove the "-" sign now at the beginning of the rows.

:)

I'm glad it helped.

If you also want to erase the hyphen after the codes, add it at the end of the pattern.

Replace the pattern statement with:

Code:
        .Pattern = "(IM ?\d+/\d+|RMR ?\d+)(\s*\-)?"

Hi

I think that the first link you posted, from Aivosto is a very nice 1 page introduction. The other 2 seem also OK, one another with a lot of examples is:

http://regexlib.com/DisplayPatterns.aspx

where you can display the patterns by category.

Please keep in mind that the regex's are here for more than 30 years and in dozens of languages. This means that if you google them you'll get millions of hits but some expressions may not work in vba. There are many variations in the implementations and so an example that you see on the net may not work for microsoft, the feature may not even exist, like for ex. the LookBehind has not yet been implemented by ms.
