Removing letters from a cell

Is there a formula that would display only the first 3 letter of a cell? i.e.

"ABCDEF" would be "ABD"
"XYZLMN" would be "XYZ"
.....


and I also would like to know if there is a formula that can display the last 3 letters:

"ABCDEF" would be "DEF"
"XYZLMN" would be "LMN"

How about

=LEFT(A1,3)
=RIGHT(A1,3)
