Hello,
I have a spreadsheet of 22,600 items. I have a column that has a product ID number followed by a description. I need to remove the description and have just the ID number. My problem is product ID #'s are not all the same length. Is there a formula or an easy way to remove the unneeded text? Below is an example of some of the items. I need the numbers that are listed in front of the word Miller or even after the word Miller as they are the same #.

TIA Trish

Excel Facts

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
Since there appears to always be a space after the product number, this formula should work for you...

=LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1&" ")-1)

Hi Rick,

For my own education, why the need for the space " " after A1 (A1&" "), is it a safeguard for situations that may arise?

In case you have blank cells within your data or if you copy the formula down past the end of your current data (in anticipation of future data) in Column A, the formula will not display a #VALUE! error.

Find will report an error if " " is not found inside string

Thanks Rick, & BP, should've realized that...
