Return Header

Is there a way to lookup a value within a table and return the header for the coulmn that data point is in?

Example: Sheet 1

Sheet 2 has value 62 in it so I need a formula that will return column header "B"

Assuming that Sheet1!A1:D1 contains the header, Sheet1!A2:D6 contains the data, and Sheet2!A2 contains the number of interest, try...

=INDEX(Sheet1!$A$1:$D$1,SMALL(IF(Sheet1!$A$2:$D$6=Sheet2!A2,COLUMN(Sheet1!$A$1:$D$1)-COLUMN(Sheet1!$A$1)+1),1))

...confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER. Note that if there's more than one column containing the number of interest, the column header for the first occurrence is returned.

You have a comma instead of a minus sign. The formula should be...

=INDEX('Sheet 1'!$A$1:$CA$1,SMALL(IF('Sheet 1'!$A$2:$CA$171='Sheet 2'!$A$1,COLUMN('Sheet 1'!$A$1:$CA$1)-COLUMN('Sheet 1'!$A$1)+1),1))

Also, the columns referenced by INDEX should be the same as the columns referencing the data. I've adjusted the formula to refer to Columns A through Column CA for both instances. Adjust this, if neccessary.

If you are agreeable to using VBA macro:

I noted that you really do not have a column header (label row) but were asking which column the value was in. I have been trying to write a function for this but no matter what I do I cannot get it to work. However, the following will work as a macro:

(The benefit of this macro is that you can use your mouse pointer to select any group of cells. You are not limited to just a predetermined range. The downside of this particular macro is that I assume you are working only with columns A through Z.)
