Hello all,

I have a problem that I cant find an easy way to explain so I'll post a picture.
groups.jpg

I'm using:
- Windows XP
- Excel 2007

What I need is a secondary (visual) grouping of columns in the graph.
As seen on the picture as "Group1", "Group2" and "Group3"

The values on Y axis dont matter, but they do on the X axis.
Group1 needs to be from 0 - 400
Group 2 from 400 - 700 for instance
etc.

Ty in advance! And let me know if I broke any forum rules. I did a search for my problem but due to english not being my first language I have some problems googling the right question for this problem!

Excel Facts

How to fill five years of quarters?
Type 1Q-2023 in a cell. Grab the fill handle and drag down or right. After 4Q-2023, Excel will jump to 1Q-2024. Dash can be any character.
If I wasnt clear enough perhaps, just to clear things. I found the picture of the graph on the internet and I want the same grouping setup. And I cant find the right tools.

Do I have to add data and work with that to create those 3 "boxes" groups?

Ty.

Tnx for the reply :)

- I uploaded it to imageshack. And did the arrows to mark the groups.
- I also noticed that I misstyped the axis. The Y axis is relevant for the size of the groups. The X axis are countries for instance so it doesnt matter. The visual box groups the countries (on X axis) by size on (Y axis)

I still can't see the pictures here... might be the company firewall, I will retry at home tonight.

Np.

And when I think about it, I would settle even for horizontal lines (and not a box boxing them in) over the selected columns. So it clearly marks the groups. And a text bracket over the line to enter the "Group 1" of text for instance.

Does the group size have to be dynamic? If the groups are always in the same X position, you could just draw a box with the drawing tools.

@Steve-True. Thats a nice way around it. I might try that. The only problem I have is the X axis not being numerical. So I would somehow need to work around it.

@HikerBrian. I found another source of this grouping style and it seems to me, someone here really was playing around with ms-paint. What strikes me as odd though is that the image source is government site.

Because this is only for presentation purposes only and better understanding of the numbers I might do the same. Although the first picture does kind of not look "hacked" so I thats why I thought there was excel coding behind it.

Sometimes simple things can be hard to do.
Ty both for input.
