In column A, my worksheet is populated with entries like 701-01, 701-04, 701-05, 702-01, 702-03, 703-01, 703-04, etc. Column B contains dollar amounts. There are hundreds of rows.

I'd like a formula that would sum column B by all the entries in column A that start with 701, regardless of the dash or two digit number that follows. A helper column using LEFT could be used to isolate the three digit code, but I'd prefer using a formula and not add a new column.

How can I do this?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Workdays for a market open Mon, Wed, Friday?
Yes! Use "0101011" for the weekend argument in NETWORKDAYS.INTL or WORKDAY.INTL. The 7 digits start on Monday. 1 means it is a weekend.
Try something like this:
=SUMIF(A2:A100,"701*",B2:B100)
adjust the ranges to suit your data.

As soon as I figured out that there are leading spaces, this works!

Thanks!
