£ sign gets lost when saving to CSV or text

I'm trying to save an Excel spreadsheet to a text file - I've tried both CSV and (tab-separated) text file. I'm encountering a problem that the spreadsheet contains a lot of UK GBP currency values of the form eg. £23.45. However, on saving, the £ sign always gets converted to the character œ, thus: œ23.45. If I reload a CSV file back into Excel, the character remains œ.

Anyone any idea what's going on or how to stop this behaviour? (FWIW I'm in the UK and my Windows XP regional option is set to English (United Kingdom).

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.

Maybe best to include a separate currency column? e.g. GBP
