Simple counting of similar values in columns

Hi All,
I would like to count the combination of two values in a list but I could not figure it out that should I do it with formula, pivot table, VBA or PQ. One idea was to use concatenate values in column B and C then count the values but I am pretty sure there is easer solution available. Here is the attachment;

Basically, item 10 and material X is used 2 times in the list so in column D it should give me a value as "2" and item 10 + material Y is used only once etc...

put this in D2 and copy it donw:
Excel Formula:
=COUNTIFS(C$2:C5,C2,B$2:B5,B2)
