SIMPLE ONE re: moving data

I have a list of data going horizontally across row 1. I am trying to get the list going down vertically down column A. When I drag cell A$1 down column A, I do not get the values going across. My second, third, fourth, etc values are still what was in the first cell.


EX: A B C D

A
A
A
A
A
A

Can someone please tell me how I get the data to appear as:
A
B
C
D
without having to copy and paste every horizontal cell? Thanks in advance.

1) Easiest way
copy the range and right click on A2 then choose Pastespecial -> check Transpose
then delete 1st row

2) by the formula
in cell A2
=OFFSET(A2,-(ROW()-1),COLUMN()+ROW()-2)
then fildown as you wish
copy entire column A, then pastespecial -> check Value
