I'm trying to sort a substantial list of titles e.g. C1, C2, C3, C4... C10, C11, C12, C100 etc. However on sorting Excel arranges the cells C1, C10, C11, C12, C100, C2, C3, C4 (default sort order). Is there a way to sort the cells paying attention to the numeric value e.g. C1 then C2, not C1 then C100?

Kind regards.

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
Can you pad your numeric portion with leading zeroes, like C001, C002,...C100?

Hello,

Or can you split the cell into two columns with C and the number, then sort?

Alternatively create a custom list C1, C2.. C100 then use this asthe SORT under options.

You can create a custom list in tools options custom lists. Add a new series as C1,C2,C3.

Then when you sort, change the options box to your list type instead of normal.

hope this helps
