okay here is the problem that I am having:

I have filepaths in column A, each file path ends with a .pdf document and each .pdf document is named with a 7 digit number (usually starts with 0). FilePaths are different lenghts (ex: C:/folder/folder1/folder2/folder3/1234567.pdf or C:/folder/folder1/folder2/1234567.pdf)...now this is what I need:

I would like to extract the last part of that file path (the .pdf file) into let's say column B but removing it from the originating cell. Once that is done, I would like for excel to figure out when the filepaths start differing...so I need the Beg Row # and the End Row #, Beg PDF # and the End ROW #...please tell me this makes sense?!

Hope it does!

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
A couple of questions

1) how are the file paths put into cell x Column A
Automatically or manually type in

2)You have C:/folder/folder1/folder2/folder3/1234567.pdf in A cell 1 eg

then you want C:/folder/folder1/folder2/folder3 in A cell 1 eg

column B cell 1 you want 1234567.pdf

3)How many file paths are there Should they be grouped together, sorted before you start to differentiate them or are they date sensitive.

4)how do you want the difference flagged

I almost just want to give up, I dont even know how to correctly express myself it's that confusing...:confused::(

Trying this again:

A1 = C:/filepath/folder/1234567.pdf
A2 = C:/filepath/folder/1234568.pdf
A3 = C:/filepath/folder/1234569.pdf
A4 = C:/filepath/folder1/1234561.pdf
A5 = C:/filepath/folder1/1234562.pdf
A6 = C:/filepath/folder2/subfolder/1234560.pdf

so Column B I would like everything except the file name (e.g. C:/filepath/folder2/subfolder/)

Column C I would like file names (e.g. 1234567.pdf, 1234568.pdf, etc.)

D1 I would like the beginning file name (e.g. 1234567.pdf of C:/filepath/folder/)

E1 I would like the end file name (e.g. 1234569.pdf of C:/filepath/folder/)

F1 I would like beginning row, so in this example beginning row is A1

G1 I would like end row, so in this example it is A3

...hope this helps anything...if not...i am officially quitting!:crash:

I am using neither...not too familiar with VBA and macros...maybe that's my problem...but I've given up on it...if you figure it out it would be an enlightenment for me but if not...idk...one of those things I am just going to have to try to "erase out of my memory" :/
