stopping excel from adding an apostrophe in the formula bar

As the title suggests, excel keeps adding an apostrophe ( ' ) when I try to add a space in the formula bar. The space is the only "character" if you will, I need in the cell. How do I stop excel from adding the ' ?

Is your cell formatted as text?
Do you have transition turned on in your excel options?

Yes to both.

Then turn off transitions.
