Hello everyone,

I am trying to calculate the subtotals of specific individuals using subtotal function/fomular but with difficulties. Here is the problem. Say, I have 3 columns with the following data:

Name--- Sex ---- Age
John ---- Male -----25
Peter ----Male -----17
Jane---- Female ---20
Sarah ---Female ----21
Laura ---Female ----24
Moses ---Male --- - 13
Paula ---female -----29
Sandar-- Female --- 18
Noah -----Male -----30

(The list goes on..)

I need to calculate the Sum of ages for ONLY Male students. And also sum ONLY female students. I know I could sort them and calculate each seperately, but if I sort them that would change the positions at which the students belong. I gather there is a better how excel can calculate them without rearranging the students.

You help will be highly appreciated.

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
Assuming "sex" in column B and "ages" in column C, place this function in the cell where you want the result:

=SUMIF(B2:B7,"female",C2:C7)

Obviously change ranges and male / female to suite.
