Sum Based on Dates

Hi Forum,

I'm New to Excel Programming and have a basic understanding of both macros and formulas.
I'm are after a formula for the following;

Purchase	Date	Qty	Total Cost
Compressor	28/2/2014	1	600	25/8/2014
Battery	7/5/2014	2	80	31/8/2014
Spray Gun	26/8/2014	2	400
Work Boots	27/8/2014	1	150

<tbody>
</tbody>

I would like a formula to give me a sum of D (Total Cost) Based on a period between 2 Dates (The ones in Column E).

=sumifs(D2:D5,B2:B5,if(AND(

This is what i have come up with so far not sure if I'm on the right track or nor and I'm not sure how to finish it.
Any Help Would be greatly appreciated Thanks Guys.

Try:

=SUMIFS($D$2:$D$5,$B$2:$B$5,">0"&E1,$B$2:$B$5,"<="&E2)

But please correct the formula i gave you from ">0" to ">="
