Hi

I have taken over a spreadsheet which uses several formula, including sum function, without specifying the full range each time. I am trying to fathom out the logic. Anyone able to shed some light please? picture attached.

the formula is written sum(A2#)

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
What version of Excel are you using?

I suggest that you update your Account details (or click your user name at the top right of the forum) so helpers always know what Excel version(s) & platform(s) you are using as the best solution often varies by version. (Don’t forget to scroll down & ‘Save’)

Difficult to tell from the low res image, but it looks as though the formula is using A2# where the # indicates that A2 is the start of a spill range & so it sums the whole range.

Thanks for the tip Fluff, I have now reflected my Office version (365) as part of my account details. The formula in the existing sheet is =sum(A2#) which works. Interestingly, if I replicate in a blank sheet I get #ref?

It will only work if the cell is the 1st cell in a spill range.
