Sumif Formula using data on another sheet

I am probably using the wrong function as it does not work
=SUMIF(Mar!A6:A1000,C12,Mar!E6:AI1000)
I have the formula on a sheet named "Clients"
The first range is the range which contains my client names on the "Mar" worksheet
C12 is the client name (Criteria) in my list of clients on the "Clients" Sheet and the formula is on the same sheet in cell I12
The second range is the columns which contain the data which is the number of hours I have worked for that client in the format "[h]:mm"

Can anyone help or am I barking up the wrong tree with this function

i have answered your other question with a solution
SUM() with a VLOOKUP() and Array , and using an indirect to get the sheet name from the header
=SUM(VLOOKUP($C4, INDIRECT("'"&D$3&"'!$A$6:$AI$30"),{5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,35}, FALSE))

BUT as i say see your other question
