Sumif?

I want to search a sheet, find data for specific persons and total that data for that specific person into one cell. I tried SUMIF but its still more manual that I would like (or maybe I'm going it wrong). So if last name equals Smith (or Jones, or etc), how many items does that person have?

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Sort by date Sort by votes
If you have a column E
Smith
Jones
Williiams

then =SUMIF(A:A,E1,D:D) will adjust as it it dragged down.

That would be the easist way to do that.
