Sumif ??

I have a column that includes the following letters:

W
L
P

In separate cells I would like to be able to calculate (summarize) how many W's, L's & P's are in the column . For example:

27 (W's)
19 (L's)
6 (P's)

I have been trying to use various IF and SUMIF formulas, but I have been unable to find the correct one. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Try like this

=COUNTIF(A1:A100,"W")

 

[TiaXL]

=countif(a:a,"w")
